Hybrid - Initial Training - EMT Basic Course Description Information Hybrid - Initial Training - EMT Basic Course Our 240 hour Hybrid EMT-Basic program exceeds the minimum hours as required for certification as a Basic EMT in South Carolina (200 hours minimum required by DHEC). This is the initial pre-hospital emergency medical technician certification in South Carolina and there are no pre-requisites. This program prepares the candidate to provide basic emergency medical care to victims of trauma and illness. This course follows and exceeds the 2009 US Department of Transportation (DOT) / National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) EMT-Basic National Standard Curriculum. This is a hybrid course and totals 88 hours online, 136 hours in class, for a total of 224 hours. Entrance Requirements High School Diploma or GED (copy must be provided). Eighteen (18) years of age prior to the last class Achieve the minimum score on the Wonderlic Exam ($35.00 cost) or have thirteen (13) or more college credits. Be physically fit and able to perform all the tasks required of an EMT-Basic (refer to Appendix A: Americans with Disabilities Act, Attachment 1: Functional Position Description, for description of all essential duties of an EMT)

Anatomy and Physiology - 128 Hours Description Information Anatomy and Physiology - 128 Hours This 128 hour course was designed as the anatomy and physiology prerequisite for the Paramedic curriculum and meets all of the anatomy and physiology objectives of the 2009 U.S. Department of Transportation/NHTSA Paramedic Curriculum. This provides students with a better understanding of the "why's and how's" of the different illnesses and injuries encountered in the field. The course provides EMS personnel the opportunity to solidify the foundation of their medical knowledge in a concentrated, 128 hour course on human anatomy and physiology. Paramedic students may exempt this module if they have a passing score in a course taught by a Technical School, College, or University that meets the objectives of the Anatomy and Physiology curriculum. If the student completed the class more than five (5) years prior to the start date of the paramedic class, the student must pass the comprehensive final exam to exempt the Anatomy and Physiology prerequisite. Only one attempt will be allowed. This will be an online classroom course, with live lectures online and in-class labratory components. Paramedic- Initial Training Description Information Paramedic- Initial Training -The Dates Shown are the start and end dates. -The competency-based paramedic course follows the 2009 National EMS Education Standards and consists of at least 1,346 hours of classroom instruction, laboratory, clinical and field rotations through the Lowcountry Region. In addition, students will complete provider level courses in trauma, advance cardiac life support, and advance level pediatric life support. -The course will prepare students to participate in the National Registry Paramedic exam, however, cannot guarantee success on any certification exam. -Prerequisite Requirements: -NREMT EMT Basic Card -Satisfactory Score on the SLE-Q, and EMT Competency Exam. -Grade of “C” or Better in the LCREMS Anatomy and Physiology Course, or college equivalent within 5 years. -SLED Background check can be obtained through www.catch.sled.sc.gov -Must be covered by employers' Worker's Compensation or have major medical health insurance that remains in effect throughout Paramedic training. - Documented Immunizations against the following: Seasonal Flu, Varicella (3 doses), TDaP (Within 5 Years), Hepatitis B (full series) -Student must also have a Negative PPD Skin test within 12 months and Hepatitis B Titer. -Negative Drug screen scheduled by LCREMS Faculty. -The Lowcountry Regional EMS Council is approved by the South Carolina State Approving Agency to receive Veterans Administration benefits for paramedic training. Please contact the Council office for information about utilizing your VA benefits for paramedic tuition. Federal law requires additional specific policies regarding recipients of Veterans Administration Education Benefits. These policies may be found here. -Class size limited to the first 32 qualified, paid registrations.
