EMS Instructor - Methodology Course Description Information EMS Instructor - Methodology Course The forty-hour EMS Instructor Training Program focuses on those skills necessary to successfully present any of the Certificate EMS courses. The course provides a solid foundation in learning theory, yet moves directly into hands on application. With the emphasis on practical skill development, instructor trainees will complete this course with the confidence and skills necessary to teach any EMS course. This course is designed as a series of interactive lessons facilitated by an instructor trainer. Included throughout the course are group discussions, individual exercises, and scenario based role plays that allow participants to apply their developing instructor skills. The EMS Instructor course is required for all Training Officers and anyone wishing to be considered for training as a Basic EMT Instructor, Advanced EMT Instructor, or Paramedic Instructor.

Advanced EMT - Initial Training Description Information Advanced EMT - Initial Training The 248 hour AEMT program is the next certification level above EMT. This program prepares the candidate to provide more aggressive care to victims of trauma and airway compromise as well as providing the student with more in-depth patient assessment skills. Skills taught in this program include nasal intubation and IV therapy. Entrance Requirements Must maintain at minimum a South Carolina or National Registry EMT certification throughout the course. Achieve the minimum score on the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS). Refresher candidates are not required to take the TEAS exam. Each student must be covered by employer's Worker's Compensation or have major medical health insurance that remains in effect throughout intermediate training. The clinical contracts require that our office have on file for each student participating in the clinical process a current health statement verifying that the student has tested negative for tuberculosis within twelve (12) months of the beginning of the class and verifying immunization against Rubella, Rubeola, Varicella and Hepatitis B. The Health Statement form and detailed instructions will be provided at the first class meeting. The Lowcountry Regional EMS Council is approved by the South Carolina State Approving Agency to receive Veterans Administration benefits for paramedic training. Please contact the Council office for information about utilizing your VA benefits for paramedic tuition. Federal law requires additional specific policies regarding recipients of Veterans Administration Education Benefits. These policies may be found here. Basic EMT Course - Initial Training Description Information Basic EMT Course - Initial Training The 200 hour EMT-Basic program is the initial pre-hospital emergency medical technician certification in South Carolina. This program prepares the candidate to provide basic emergency medical care to victims of trauma and illness. This course follows and exceeds the 2009 US Department of Transportation (DOT) / National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) EMT-Basic National Standard Curriculum. This is a hybrid course and totals 88 hours online, 136 hours in class, for a total of 224 hours. The course includes: DOT/NHTSA EMT-Basic National Standard Curriculum Advanced Airway Module CPR Course SC Enrichment Modules Infection Control Hazardous Materials Pneumatic Anti-Shock Garments IV Maintenance Weapons of Mass Destruction Entrance Requirements High School Diploma or GED (copy must be provided). Eighteen (18) years of age prior to the last class Achieve the minimum score on the Wonderlic Exam ($35.00 cost) or have a college degree. Paramedic - Initial Training Description Information Paramedic - Initial Training The Dates Shown are the start and end dates...call if you have questions. The competency based paramedic course follows the 2009 National EMS Education Standards and consists of at least 1,346 hours of classroom instruction, laboratory, clinical and field rotations through the Lowcountry Region. In addition students will complete provider level courses in trauma, advance cardiac life support, and advance level pediatric life support. The course will prepare students to participate in the National Registry Paramedic exam. Entrance Requirements Must maintain at minimum a South Carolina or National Registry EMT certification throughout the course. Achieve the minimum score on the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS). Successfully complete an anatomy and physiology course within the past 5 years. Lowcountry Regional EMS Council will be offering a LREMSC Anatomy & Physiology Course. Please contact the LREMSC Education Director if you believe you qualify for an exemption to have the courses you have successfully completed evaluated. An official school transcript is required to perform an exemption evaluation. Please assure that you allow ample time for the acquisition of an official transcript and the exemption evaluation process. Must be covered by employers' Worker's Compensation or have major medical health insurance that remains in effect throughout Paramedic training. The clinical contract requires that all individuals having contact with patients (including students performing clinical rotations) undergo a national criminal background check. Each student is required to submit a photocopy of their driver’s license to the Council Staff for completion of the criminal background check. If you are considering paramedic training and have an arrest record, you must contact us as soon as possible to determine whether you are eligible for participation in the paramedic course. The hospital and field clinical contracts require that our office have on file for each student participating in the clinical process a current health statement verifying that the student has tested negative for tuberculosis within three (3) months prior to the beginning of clinicals and verifying immunization against Rubella, Rubeola, Varicella, Tetanus and Hepatitis B. The contracts also require a drug screen immediately prior to the start of clinical rotations. The Lowcountry Regional EMS Council is approved by the South Carolina State Approving Agency to receive Veterans Administration benefits for paramedic training. Please contact the Council office for information about utilizing your VA benefits for paramedic tuition. Federal law requires additional specific policies regarding recipients of Veterans Administration Education Benefits. These policies may be found here. Class size limited to the first 32 qualified, paid registrations. A fully executed payment plan agreement is acceptable to qualify the applicant as paid. Train-the-Trainer OSHA/Bloodborne Pathogens, Airbo Description Information Train-the-Trainer OSHA/Bloodborne Pathogens, Airbo Training must comply with the OSHA blood borne pathogen regulation and the Ryan White Notification Law. A major part of this requirement is training on the diseases and infection control. The OSHA mandate also requires that the trainer be “qualified”. This course will meet the OSHA requirement for your becoming a qualified trainer for your department. This course meets the statement – certificate of additional specialized training.
