Basic EMT Course - Initial Training Description Information Basic EMT Course - Initial Training Our 235 hour EMT-Basic program is the initial pre-hospital emergency medical technician certification in South Carolina. This program meets and exceeds the minimum 200 hour requirement under DHEC Regulation. This program prepares the candidate to provide basic emergency medical care to victims of trauma and illness. This course follows and exceeds the 2009 US Department of Transportation (DOT) / National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) EMT-Basic National Standard Curriculum. This is a hybrid course and totals 88 hours online, 136 hours in class, for a total of 224 hours. The course includes: DOT/NHTSA EMT-Basic National Standard Curriculum Advanced Airway Module CPR Course SC Enrichment Modules Infection Control Hazardous Materials Pneumatic Anti-Shock Garments IV Maintenance Weapons of Mass Destruction Entrance Requirements High School Diploma or GED (copy must be provided). Eighteen (18) years of age prior to the last class Achieve the minimum score on the Wonderlic Exam ($35.00 cost) or have a minimum of 13 college credits. . Be physically fit and able to perform all the tasks required of an EMT-Basic (refer to . Class size limited to the first 24 qualified, paid registrations. Enrolling All initial students must complete an Enrollment Agreement in person at the Council office in order to enroll in a LCREMSC program. The Enrollment Agreement may be completed on the day that the student takes the Wonderlic exam, electronically from home.

Advanced EMT - Initial Training Description Information Advanced EMT - Initial Training The 248 hour AEMT program is the next certification level above EMT. This program prepares the candidate to provide more aggressive care to victims of trauma and airway compromise as well as providing the student with more in-depth patient assessment skills. Skills taught in this program include nasal intubation and IV therapy. Entrance Requirements Must maintain at minimum a South Carolina or National Registry EMT certification throughout the course. Achieve the minimum score on the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS). Refresher candidates are not required to take the TEAS exam. Each student must be covered by employer's Worker's Compensation or have major medical health insurance that remains in effect throughout intermediate training. The clinical contracts require that our office have on file for each student participating in the clinical process a current health statement verifying that the student has tested negative for tuberculosis within twelve (12) months of the beginning of the class and verifying immunization against Rubella, Rubeola, Varicella and Hepatitis B. The Health Statement form and detailed instructions will be provided at the first class meeting. The Lowcountry Regional EMS Council is approved by the South Carolina State Approving Agency to receive Veterans Administration benefits for paramedic training. Please contact the Council office for information about utilizing your VA benefits for paramedic tuition. Federal law requires additional specific policies regarding recipients of Veterans Administration Education Benefits. These policies may be found here.
